When I first moved to Southwest Florida in 1994, Sanibel Island instantly captured my heart. Back then, the pace was slower, the faces were familiar, and the sunsets seemed to pause time itself. Decades later, the island has evolved. New homes have risen, the real estate market has transformed, and modern conveniences have found their way onto Periwinkle Way, yet somehow, Sanibel still feels like the same comforting home it’s always been.
There’s a certain rhythm to island life that never changes. Mornings still start with bicycles gliding toward the lighthouse, shell collectors combing the beaches before the heat sets in, and the sound of the surf setting the tone for the day. You can still stop by Over Easy Cafe and run into someone you’ve known for years or make a new friend in line who’s just discovering what makes this place so special.
As a Realtor who’s spent many years helping families and investors find their piece of paradise here, I’ve had a front-row seat to Sanibel’s evolution. The market has grown stronger and more sophisticated, with buyers drawn to the island’s exclusivity, natural beauty, and enduring value. Even as the rest of Southwest Florida has expanded rapidly, Sanibel has remained intentional about preserving what makes it truly unique: no high-rises, no traffic lights, and an unwavering commitment to conservation.

In many ways, Sanibel’s charm lies in its restraint. Growth has come, yes! But it’s come thoughtfully. The island continues to balance modern living with respect for nature. Protected wildlife refuges still cover two-thirds of the land, and you’re just as likely to see a great egret in your backyard as you are a neighbor watering their garden.
For me, the feeling of “home” isn’t just about where I live, it’s about belonging to a community that values connection over convenience. I’ve watched generations of families fall in love with this island, just as mine did years ago. Whether you’re a year-round resident, a seasonal visitor, or someone dreaming of making Sanibel your new address, there’s an undeniable sense of peace here that endures through time and tide.
Sanibel may have changed in small ways, but its soul rem
ains the same. A sanctuary where nature, community, and family intertwine. And after all these years, every time I cross that causeway and the water opens up on both sides, I’m reminded why this island will always feel like home.
